Saqqara

Saqqara is the site of the oldest freestanding man-made structure known, the Step Pyramid of Zoser built by Imhotep in the Third Dynasty, around 2680BC. It was the precursor of the Great Pyramids of the Fourth Dynasty, almost 100 years later.

After visting Saqqara we briefly stopped at the ancient site of the great city of Memphis. All that remains is a few statues, including a giant one of Ramesses II which is actually more recent than the others.

We visited these two sights on Friday 9th June. Friday is the holiest day of the week for muslims, and on our way back our taxi driver stopped at a mosque so that he could pray.
